More than 500 people in just one week have signed a petition backing Manchester City Council's bid to issue a compulsory purchase order for London Road Fire Station.

The petition, launched last week by local Labour councillors, follows a decision by Manchester City Council to attempt a second CPO of the landmark fire station after the first in 2011 was quashed by Eric Pickles.

Cllr Kevin Peel said:

"We're overwhelmed by the support of the community for our petition in such a short space of time. After almost 30 years of neglect by Britannia Hotels, this iconic site can be left to deteriorate no further."

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said:

"We're extremely grateful for the support of residents. We're doing all we can to ensure this beautiful building is restored and brought into use as soon as possible."
