Support our campaign for a new school

Councillors have launched a campaign for a new primary school for city centre families.

255 babies were born to city centre parents in 2014, a huge increase on recent years. More and more parents are choosing to stay in the city centre after having children, but currently have very limited choices when it comes to education and many are forced to move elsewhere.

New Islington Free School in Ancoats opened in September 2013 as a one form entry school, with 30 children in each intake. The school includes the city centre in its catchment area but is already hugely oversubscribed. The school is set to expand into a new building and take in an additional 30 children each year in September 2016 - supported by Manchester City Council - but this will not meet growing demand in the city centre and surrounding area.

We want to see a new school built which caters to city centre families and meets future demand.

  • A primary school is overdue. MCC say move to the city is Great but where are the nurseries and schools? The only Nursery available is for the MCC workers right in St Petes Square. How is that fair??
  • A school needs to be created in the area within the inner ring road, so city residents can walk to it.

Combine it with a nursery and there will be a faculty for city workers.

The problem is – how will you ever get the land/ building when the council has no fund.?

The area of First street would have been perfect – is it too late ? Or can the new development area behind deansgate station be used?
