Councillors celebrate as city centre swoops Silver Gilt award at North West In Bloom awards 2014.

Manchester’s gardeners have proved that they are among the very best in Britain by winning no less than 132 North West In Bloom awards.

The awards, which are judged annually by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), recognise communities who go the extra mile to make their neighbourhoods more beautiful, through activities including the creation of floral displays, caring for local green spaces and organising clean-up events to combat littering.

Manchester city centre scooped the Silver Gilt award for its parks and green space.

Entries are judged not just on their horticultural excellence, but also on the level of community involvement, recycling efforts and the environmental benefit to the area.

Cllr Beth Knowles said:

"It's fantastic to see the hard work and creativity of city centre residents and Red Rose Forest recognised with this prestigious award. We can't wait until the judges return next year and see a city centre in full bloom after our continued greening and improvements to public spaces."
