Volunteer to build our new 'floating islands' in Bridgewater Basin!

Councillors are calling for volunteers to help build our innovative new 'floating islands' which will be brightening up Bridgewater Basin this spring.

The green 'floating islands' are one of several Clean City funded greening projects secured by councillors as part of hundreds of thousands of pounds of investment in greening the city centre.

These innovative 'floating islands' will be located around the water’s edge of the Bridgewater Basin.

We want to engage residents in delivering these projects. Manchester City Council are running a small number of planting sessions at the basin for you to come along to. Numbers are restricted so booking is essential.

Dates and times available for 4 workshops are:

Tuesday 15th March

  • 10am - 12pm
  • 2 - 4pm

Wednesday 16th March

  • 10am - 12pm
  • 2 - 4pm

Come along as an individual, or part of a corporate team, or a volunteer group. Everyone is welcome to join in.

Things to consider when booking:

  • Planting the 'islands' will be on land around the basin
  • You will not be asked to get in the water
  • Outdoor clothing is required as you will be getting your hands dirty
  • We will be there rain or shine, so bring waterproofs
  • Sensible outdoor footwear is recommended
  • All tools will be provided, with a briefing given at the start
  • Photographs will be taken

The project aims to increase the biodiversity, improve the resilience of the city centre to climate change, and create a more welcoming and attractive area of the city.

For more information or to book e-mail Andrea at a.marshall@manchester.gov.uk.

Booking deadline is Monday 29 February.

If you want to get involved in local green groups or volunteer on any other projects in the city centre, fill out this form on our website and we'll be in touch.
