Join local councillors, staff and volunteers from the Canal & River Trust and local residents for our first volunteering session and inaugural meeting of the new Friends of Rochdale 9 community group this Sunday, 8th May.
We will be doing some wild seed planting as well as gardening at our ‘floating garden’ offside the towpath (thanks to the Canal and River Trust for letting us use the work boat!)
Our aim is to transform the Rochdale Canal into a greener and more attractive destination with lush planters, floating gardens and safe and clean towpaths.
The volunteer day will consist of two sessions. We will be gardening from 12 to 2pm, meeting at Lock 89 on the canal (accessible from the side of Rain bar on Great Bridgewater Street or Whitworth Street West opposite HOME) and formalizing the Friends of Rochdale 9 (FoR9) group and discussing future acitivity from 2pm to 3pm at Dukes 92 (where lunch will be provided as well).
We will be appointing a chair and secretary to the FoR9 so if you're interested in leading the group please do come along. We'll then discuss your views on the canal, priority issues to tackle on volunteer days and the upcoming canal festival in September, which the group will take a leading role in supporting.
You can join both sessions or just one. Everyone is very welcome!
Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes and possibly things you don’t mind getting dirty (and waterproofs if rain is likely).
