See your councillors in action

Councillors welcome online streaming of scrutiny meetings.

You can now see your city centre councillors in action after the council began streaming scrutiny committee meetings online.

Full council meetings have been streamed for some time but streaming of scrutiny committee meetings only began in October as part of plans to allow residents to better understand the work of the council and keep track of what councillors are up to.

At October’s meeting of the Neighbourhoods scrutiny committee, of which councillors Kevin Peel and Beth Knowles are both members, city centre councillors asked questions about:

Library provision at HMP Manchester and upskilling library volunteers

Tours of the new Central Library

Upscaling a project to improve recycling rates in the city centre and roll out food waste recycling

Improving weekend street cleaning and pushing landowners to keep derelict sites clear of flytipping

Improving technology in the city centre parking scheme and updating the city centre residents parking scheme

Responding to residents concerns about the expansion of Oxford Road station and the importance of maintaining Whitworth Street West as a cycle route and creating a new entrance to the station on WSW; and

Consulting with councillors and residents on plans for the future use of heritage buildings including the Cornerhouse

Cllr Kevin Peel said:

"With our meetings being held during the day it can be difficult for residents to actually attend to see what we’re up to. I’ve long called for scrutiny meetings to be streamed online so I’m pleased we’re now doing it. I hope residents will tune in to watch and I invite anyone who is interested to get in touch and see how you can become more engaged in our work."

Cllr Beth Knowles said:

"Streaming means our residents can see the work we do on your behalf at the town hall and I’d encourage everyone to watch the meetings."
