Councillor Kevin Peel writes to the Manchester Evening News ahead of Small Business Saturday.
Saturday 6th December is Small Business Saturday, the UK's second annual day to highlight the contribution small businesses make and encourage people to buy from small local firms and independent shops, giving a much-needed boost.
Last year it was a big success. 43% of consumers who knew about Small Business Saturday said they spent more because of it and it encouraged nearly £500m of extra trade across the country. It was the largest celebration of small business the country had ever seen.
This year I hope it will be even bigger. As part of a national launch tour the SBS bus will be visiting the Northern Quarter this Friday (21st) from 11am to 4pm and there'll be a day of activity around the launch. Come along to Thomas Street and show your support for small businesses in the Northern Quarter and across Manchester this Friday. And don't forget to shop local on 6th December and all year round.
Small businesses are a vital part of our local economy and our local communities here in Manchester and we need to get behind them.
